Motorcycle Safety Tips!

Motorcycle safety Harbord Insurance

As a motorcyclist, you are more vulnerable on the road than the drivers of passenger vehicles.

Motorcycles are small, making them less visible to other vehicles. On a motorcycle, you also lack the extra protection of a seatbelt and airbags. In BC, motorcycle accidents increase in the spring and summer and, unfortunately, lead to more injuries and fatalities. With this in mind, and as we approach warmer weather and longer days, we want to share some motorcycle safety tips so you can have peace of mind and enjoy the ride!

Stay Up To Date On Core Skills

First, no matter how seasoned you may be, we highly recommend a training course. At the very least, we recommend practicing core skills somewhere open and safe such as an empty parking lot.

Keep Your Motorcycle Well Maintained

Next, as with any vehicle, ensure you regularly maintain your motorcycle. This is especially important since motorcycles are often kept away and unused for a significant portion of the year.

Dress For Safety

And finally, before getting on the road, make sure you dress appropriately. You (and your passenger) must wear an approved motorcycle safety helmet and follow proper seating requirements. You can find details on helmet and seating laws here. It’s also essential to wear appropriate motorcycle clothing to help protect you in case of an accident. You may also want to wear reflective or bright colors to help other vehicles see you.

Now that you’re ready to hit the road follow these tips to ride safely:

  • Stay out of other driver’s blind spots
  • Always use your signals
  • Ride at a safe speed
  • Watch the road ahead for potholes, rocks, etc.
  • Don’t assume other drivers see you
  • Scan carefully at intersections

Once you’ve brushed up on all these points and feel confident in your motorcycle safety knowledge and skills, get out there and enjoy the long roads and beautiful scenery BC offers this summer!
